Today exactly 20 years ago a little miracle happened. On that day our first Maine Coon was born at the cattery of Ina and IJsbrand Gjaltema. This little red boy stole our heart straight away. He did not like showing a lot, but loved his task as couch potato ;-).
Unfortunately he is not among us anymore, he died December 27, 2007 but he will be in our heart forever.
Yesterday evening when our Xena wanted to get of the couch, her leg got stuck on one or another way. She obviously had a lot of pain and it was very hard to calm her down. She was really upset.
After a good hour, she relaxed a bit. Nevertheless she wanted to stay close to us. After some time more we were able to put her on the couch so she would be more comfortable.
Later that evening we decided to take her for her evening walk without the other two dogs. Walking was very difficult for her. She could not put weight on her back leg.
During the night we made sure she could not get up the stairs so she would not be able to fall.
This morning she still had problems walking and we decided to go to the vet. After the first examination the vet wanted to take an x-ray.
The outcome was very bad though, Xena had a tumor in her back leg that ate away most of her bone. She was also in a lot of pain. The vet said that she could give her very strong painkillers to get her over the weekend. We then took the decission not to do that.
In our opinion the interest of the dog goes first and we did not want Xena to suffer.
So we decided to let her go, she has deserved her rest without any further suffering.
This grant old lady born on the 4th of June 1999, became 12 years and 8 moths old.
Today is a day of remembrance. Exactly a year ago Amerrykoons SimplyRed passed away. We only had him for a very short time due to his sickness but he nevertheless left a everlasting impression. We will never forget him.
In February 2011 when we were in Berlin we went to a little gallery to see if we could get something special. They were selling glass objects and we saw a little glass flask. We Unfortunatelydid not buy it then because we wanted to look to other things to. In October we were also in Berlin and went to the gallery again and now we decided to buy the little flask. As it was still there it had to be destiny.
As you might have guessed. The content of this flask is Amerrykoons SimplyRed
Today is a very sad day. This morning at 10.30 AM Dynamicats Banshee passed away at the age of 13 years and 9 months.
This grand lady was born February 10, 1998 out of “Frolicoon Rebel without a Cause” and “Dynamicats Love Unlimited”. For the past 3 years she was having problems with her lungs and was therefore on antibiotics all the time. Very slowly her health decreased over time and this weekend she did not want to eat and drink anymore. As a result of this we decided that it was time for her to pass the rainbow bridge. She can now spend all her days doing what she loved to do most and that is sunbathing. She loved to sit in the sun and simply do nothing.
Today is a very sad day. We had to say goodbye to our Red.
The story started 3 months ago. When he came out of the USA he had a cold. We did not think much of that. He had been on the road for a long time. Nevertheless we went to the vet and she described antibiotics. When we were done with the antibiotics the cold was over. We then decided to take him to the show in Salzburg, where he did extremely well. When we came back he again had a cold. A new treatment with antibiotics did the trick. He was growing nicely to over 5 kilo’s. We then decided to give it another try with the show in Hellevoetsluis. After the show he unfortunately did not feel well. He lost 700 gramms in weight. After a week or so he started growing again. Not very fast, but at least growing. Because he was doing ok at that time (as it seemed) we decided to take him to the show in Berlin. He really liked it there, as he did all the shows. Little red loved the attention.
After Berlin, he had a little cold, but we decided not to give him antibiotics. That went reasonably ok. The only “worrying” part was that we did not get him on 5 kilo again. So his weight remained unchanged. Slowly he started eating less and less. From the canned food he only took the sauce part and a couple of meat chuncks.
About a week ago he also started sleeping more and his activity levels also went down. Furthermore his belly got a bit thicker. Anneke was worried about this. Yesterday evening we decided to go to the vet. She proposed to do a blood analysis. Unfortunately that did not work, so we decided to give it another try this morning when the vet had the opportunity to sedate him. After we brought him, the vet took some blood, but also decided to get some fluid out of his belly. This fluid was thick and yellow and she was able to pull strings. This left only one conclusion possible. FIP ………
As I already drove to work, I immidiately returned, picked up Anneke and both drove to the vet. We there decided to let him go.
We will have him cremated and he returns home on Thursday.
This evening, as usual when a cat passes away, we lit our stars.
Todays story is not a happy one. Last week Orlaith got a cold and was not feeling very well. We had her on antibiotics to help her getting over the cold. Nevertheless she became more ill every day. Last Wednesday we went to the vet to get a further check. Unfortunately her heart and her lungs did not sound well and she was having a little trouble breathing.
Because we did not want to extend the suffering. The vet also thought that further treatment was not in the interest of Orlaith. The vet said that she could help her a little but that would have helped Orlaith only for a couple of days.
We then had to decide to let her go. It was a hard decission but one that had to be taken to give Orlaith the last help we could give her.
We had Orlaith cremated and today she returned home to her friends.
